One critical topic in my journey as a therapist in Camden and the Southern Highlands continually surfaces self-care. While it might sound like a wellness buzzword, its importance is undeniable, akin to a good night’s sleep. I’m not here to preach but to shed light on the idea that self-care is not an elusive or lofty goal. Often, it’s as straightforward as engaging in an activity you truly enjoy.
Understanding Self-Care
Self-care can encompass a wide range of activities. It could mean engaging in physical activity, such as a simple walk, but we shouldn’t feel pressured to aim excessively high. During individual and couples therapy sessions, I often ask my clients and supervisees, “What activities do you enjoy in your free time?” Their answers lay the foundation for unique, personalised self-care strategies.
Aligning Self-Care with Personal Values
What makes this approach to self-care especially powerful is its alignment with personal values. For instance, if connection is a value you hold dear, consider setting aside time to reconnect with friends or family. If relaxation is crucial for you, a gentle massage or extra sleep on the weekend could be your self-care go-to.
Simplifying Self-Care
Remember, self-care doesn’t mean running a marathon, attending a meditation retreat, or adhering to a strict diet. Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a moment to breathe, enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, or savouring a glass of wine or beer.
Diverse Self-Care Practices
The diversity in my clients’ self-care routines never ceases to inspire me. The possibilities are endless, from beach runs and knitting to spending precious moments with family, playing games, assembling Lego sets, or cooking a delectable meal.
